“Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence. The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies.”
Psalm 59:9-10
Thought
As a former linebacker, I'm impressed by great defenses. I remember the great '85 Bears, '90 Giants, '00 Ravens, and the '13 Seahawks. The strength of their defenses enabled the offenses to play free of fear knowing that their defense was able to keep things close no matter how good or bad they played. And if something foul was done to the offense, these defenses were guaranteed to handle it when they got on the field. But these defenses could not compare to the defense of God! Israel new Him as a pillar of fire by night and cloud by day (Exodus 13:21-22); David declares "He's my rock and fortress" (Psalm 18:2), "God is our refuge and strength" (Psalm 46:1), and "He is my refuge and fortress" (Psalm 91). There's nobody like our God. He is the ultimate defender of his people. As David declared in our scripture today, we just need to wait for Him to handle it!
Prayer
Most Gracious and Heavenly Father, you truly are my rock, my refuge, my strength, my fortress, and everything else that I need and more. Help me to yield to your will in every area of my life, so that I will submit to your will. Help me to understand that when the enemy comes up against me, you can defend me adequately and I don't need to life hand or open my mouth. Help me to put my flesh under subjection so that you can get the glory out of me. Thank you for your strength. Thank you for being God! In Jesus Name, Amen.
