Bible Study Lesson – April 15, 2020 ~ 7:30 pm
Lesson 5: Reverent Sailors (Jonah 1:11-16)
Questions:
- Instead of repenting, Jonah tells the sailors to throw him overboard. Is he sacrificing his life for the lives of the sailors, or is he still stubbornly refusing to obey God’s call to Nineveh?
- The sailors, unlike Jonah, react honorably. Notice their prayer in Jonah 1:14. What did they fear? Of all those on board, who showed a more proper fear of God (see 1:9)?
Lesson 6: A Fish With An Appointment (Jonah 1:17)
Questions:
- Only three verses mention the fish. Why do you think people focus so much on this aspect of the story?
- What purpose does the fish serve in the story?
- What was Jonah expecting when he was thrown overboard? How did God use the fish to undermine Jonah’s expectations and accomplish His purpose?
Preparation
Jeremiah 29:11 declares “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Do we really properly honor the God that has our life in His hands and who has great plans for us? Does our actions line up with our faith? Take an inventory of your life and remember ALL that God has done so we can properly give Him his due . . .ALL the glory!
