Lesson 2: And He Will Draw Near To You (James 4:7-10)
Questions:
- How do we subject ourselves to God (4:7)? What are some basic steps for doing so?
- What does James’ understanding of the nature of temptation, as articulated in 1:12-16, suggest about his understanding of temptation (4:7)?
- How can we flee from the devil, temptation and evil? What does that look like from a practical standpoint?
Preparation
In the second half of 4:8, James references cleansing rituals from the Old Testament, like Leviticus 16:19. The passage details how the altar should be cleansed so that a goat could be offered for the people’s sin. James also alludes to purity rituals. Both the phrases “cleanse hands, sinners” and “purify hearts, double-minded ones” allude to the problem of sin and other problems involved with things coming before God. What habits can you change to submit yourself to Christ?
