Lesson 14: An Angry Prayer (Jonah 4:1-4)
Questions:
- Angered by God’s forgiveness of Nineveh, Jonah prays for the second time in the book. Compare Jonah’s first prayer in 2:1-9 with his prayer in 4:2-3. What changes between the first prayer and his second?
- What are Jonah’s expectations for God’s mercy? How does Jonah’s attitude change when God’s compassion is directed toward Nineveh rather than him?
- How does Jonah describe God? Read Exodus 34:6-7. What stands out to you about these descriptions?
Preparation
It’s easy to think less of Jonah for his anger about Nineveh’s salvation, but remember the severity of Nineveh’s crimes. Think of a situation where someone did something deserving of punishment. How would you have felt if they were forgiven instead? Would it make a difference to you if they had repented? Would you have been able to forgive them?
