Questions:
- The psalmist hopes for God’s protection and blessing on the king. How does the psalmist describe God’s help?
- What is the relationship between God’s help and the offerings and sacrifices mentioned in 20:3? How does Christ’s sacrifice and ongoing work assure us that we have help in our troubles?
- How do you understand the psalmist’s hope that God will give the king “your heart’s desire.” (20:4) What steps can you take to ensure that your desires align with God’s?
- What kinds of things beside God do you put your trust in?
Preparation
Psalm 20 is a royal psalm (or psalm of prayer) which was addressed to the king. The psalm may have been publicly recited as the king prepared to lead an army to battle. The psalmist hopes for God’s protection and blessing on the king. It’s important to pray for our leaders and people in authority. How often do you take time to pray for those that “have rule over you?”
