Lesson 10: The Inescapable Presence of God (Psalm 139)
Questions:
- Note the different ways the psalmist describes God’s knowledge of him in vs 1-5. Underline the aspects of the psalmist’s life that God knows.
- In vs 7-12, the psalmist describes God’s presence as inescapable. Consider examples of people in the Bible who tried to hide from God (Gen 3:8-10; Jonah 1:1-3). How did God respond to their attempt to escape God’s presence?
- What does God’s knowledge (that stretches before conception to future events) say about His purpose for each of us (read Jer 1:5)?
Preparation
Psalm 139 answers the question, “How well does God know you?” In structure, it defies categorization. Verses 1-18 are similar to a psalm of thanksgiving, but verses 19-24 shows more features of lament. However, the main theme of this psalm is God’s intimate knowledge of His people.
